Rafael da Silva, in the wake of completing a €3 million transfer to French club Lyon after seven years at Old Traffod, has claimed that Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal “didn’t like” him.
The right-back has started just six league games during Van Gaal’s reign, the last of them in October 2015, after being a regular for previous managers Moyes and Ferguson.
Rafael claimed to Globo Esporte in an interview: “I know this history that he doesn’t like Brazilians, but I can’t say: ‘Oh, he doesn’t like Brazilians.’ I know that he didn’t like me, but if that’s because I’m Brazilian, I don’t know.”
Rafael was at one time considered the best right-back in the Premier League, but under Van Gaal he was often overlooked in that position in favor of Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia, something which Rafael feels should not have happened:
“Valencia started playing as a right-back for Van Gaal. He’s also a great player, but I was doing well in that position,” he said.
